Ears That Don’t Hear; Eyes That Don’t See

05 Jul

Hello again!

This is what God gave me today in his word:

To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the LORD is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it. (Jeremiah 6:10)

What I find interested about this, is that it wasn’t only back then, it wasn’t only in Jeremiah’s time, the same basic thing is still happening; people don’t listen to “the word of the LORD” and do regard it with scorn. It may be helpful here to refresh you to what exactly “the word of the Lord” is:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:17)

Ah, so Jesus is the word and if his main goal in coming to earth was to die for it in order to save it, then the word of the Lord is in fact the Gospel (of Jesus). And so for us today, the above passage in Jeremiah to us at least means that people of today have closed their ears to the Gospel (of Jesus). And in fact the consider it scornful. But why? Why did we formerly consider the Gospel of perhaps some sort of “lower” importance. Why do Christians today still consider the Gospel just a minor tool to get people in the door and saved before moving on to “more important issues”… Why?

For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ (Matthew 13:15)

Because our eyes and ears, just like in Jeremiah’s time, have become deaf and blind to the Gospel. But it’s more than simply being able to see and hear, it requires your heart, and people no longer are willing to offer that to Jesus. I think that’s also why America to some extent is having a Spiritual drought, people think that “day-to-day-sermons” are more important than the Gospel, the source of our salvation. So what could we change? What can we do to circumcise our hearts and ears? Nothing, in of ourselves.

16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in[a] Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. (Galatians 2:16)

The Gospel, the very thing we scorned, is the only thing that can save us both now and forever. The Gospel (of Jesus) is the way that God decided that we were to be saved, it’s his outlet of love for us. It is the most important thing there is, and should be treated as such, we should take pleasure in knowing that we’re saved, not scorn it.

You are loved!
