This is what God gave me today in his word:
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will punish all those who are circumcised merely in the flesh– (Jeremiah 9:25)
Well, if not the flesh, what should we be circumcised in?
The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. (Deuteronomy 30:6)
Mere circumcision of the flesh isn’t enough, we need our heart circumcised… OK, I can think I understand that part, but how is it again that this heart-circumcision is going to happen? — It sounds a bit painful…
11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh[a] was put off when you were circumcised by[b] Christ, 12having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. (Colossians 2:11-12)
Only Christ can circumcise our hearts! It’s impossible for “human hands” to do it. — It’s impossible for us to tear away the sin, it’s only possible for us to temporarily mask it. But if we can’t do it, and only Christ can, how does he do it?
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[c] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. (Colossians 2:13-15)
And that, is how one is truly heart-circumcised. — The Gospel (of Jesus) is the only way that a person can be “heart-circumcised”… All the flesh has to be cut off before Jesus can truly shine through us. Or for that matter, before we can be Christians. And the only way that all our tons of flesh and sinfulness can be cut off is by the power of the Gospel.
You are loved!
