The Way We are Saved

03 Aug

Hello again!

This is what God has given me today in his word:

Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands– remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. (Ephesians 2:11-12)

Before we actually start to study what all these verses have to say, how is it that Paul went from point A. to point Z.? The verse before it talked about how we are the workmanship of God and how he has good works planned out for us to do. So why does Paul take such a leap from topics?

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13)

Ah, so that’s why Paul does it; to remind them how they came to be the workmanship of Christ. – Keep that in mind while we actually study the verse, the reason we can do good, or even for that matter still be alive, is because Christ died for us!

Paul wants the Ephesians to remember a time when they separated from God, a time when they were Gentiles, a filthy half-breed. But doesn’t that seem somewhat cruel to them? After all, there is no longer any Jew or Greek (Gentile). As I believe Paul himself said. So why does he bring up there heritage?

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility (Ephesians 2:13-14)

That’s why Paul bring’s it up; to remind them once again that works can’t save them, he bring’s it up to remind them that they were hopeless at one time, trying to do enough good that God would accept them. Not realizing that the whole time there is still a dividing wall of hostility keeping them from God. Nothing has changed between then in now, as far as how we are saved goes, that is. We still can’t work our way into Heaven, instead, Jesus needs to come into our life and make us into a new creation. Jesus is the only way we can be saved! The only one who can make us speak the truth, and the only one who can and will give us a new life in him!

You are loved!
