The Old Man

22 Nov

Hello again!

This is what God gave me today in his word:

But that is not the way you learned Christ!– assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:20-24)

I’ve recently (meaning about three days ago) discovered the ability to outline my study notes. Thus you may note that I went ahead today and actually put the outline into the post. — The Ephesians, it seems, were “taught” to put off the Old Man. They learned it from someone else, in other words. But how can someone be taught to put off the old man, I wonder?

assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self,

I. The Old Man.

“Assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him.” I would just like to point out that the “him” being referred to is Jesus Christ himself. We see that here: “But that is not the way you learned Christ!–“.

A. We no longer have an “Old Man.” He is dead.

To be frank, Christ teaches us to put off the Old Man by showing us the old man in question is in fact no longer old but instead very much dead. And giving us a “New Man” (fyi, all this is Spiritual. We don’t of course actually shed our skin and hop into another… Just wanted to make that clear before I get any law-suites). i.e. Christ

makes us a new creation. He smashes the old pot and makes a new one. He drops the old computer into the toilet in order to go to best buy and get a better high-tech one. He… And I’ve run out of things to say. The point being: he gets rid of the old to put in the new. — To quickly relate what actually happened: Christ murdered the Old Man when man murdered Him. Then we were born again into a new creation.

1. The “Old Man” is as dead as a man nailed to a tree.

B. If we’re Christians, we have been taught to “put off” the Old Man.

1. Thus one could say that if someone else were to teach we still have, “Two men warring inside of us,” i.e. The new and old men; that person could be considered either not even a Christian or simply untaught.

C. Formerly, we still had the “Old Man”. We still had the Sinful Nature. However, because Jesus did in fact die for us, He killed our Sinful Nature and Old Man.

1 “But,” one may say, “if our sinful nature is truly dead, why do I still sin? Why is there still sin in the world, for that matter, if Christ took it all away?” — That’s true, but we still have flesh.

We still have our flesh; our old tent. We’ve been born again into Christ Spiritually. Sadly, we’re still waiting on our bodies and the Earth itself to catch up. Thus the flesh remains. The difference between the flesh and Sinful Nature being that we’re no longer “habitually trapped.” Meaning that now we can break free of any chains Satan attempts to put on us, through the power of Christ.

Just because we have the flesh doesn’t mean we can’t resist it in the power of the Holy Spirit. But even so, if we do fall, we need to get back up again. We can do this by prayer and asking other believers for help; as well as by reading the Bible.

You are Loved!
