This is what God gave me today in His word:
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:5-6)
Well, I’d think everyone would agree, that the obvious question here is, “What’s it mean to set our minds on things of the Spirit?” And in order to answer that question, we first must ask, “What are the things of the Spirit?” (As it’s somewhat hard to set your mind on ‘things’ while not even knowing what those ‘things’ are). Well, the things of the Spirit, as according to Paul, are those things (Paul seems to equate setting our minds on the Spirit, and setting our minds on the things of the Spirit) which give life and peace. Well, what gives life and peace? … Only one ‘thing’ gives life and peace when we focus on it, and that ‘thing’ is the death and Resurrection of Christ.
This may seem like a bit of a leap: from setting your mind on the things of the Spirit, to setting your mind on Jesus’ death and Resurrection. Yet, it’s not a leap at all. After all, nothing in the World can create peace, much less life. There’s no peace nor any life factories out there. There’s no peace generator out there, nor is there a peace giving drink. No, the World cannot create peace nor life. Peace and life have to be brought into the World, which is exactly what Jesus did, when He died to give us life, and was pierced to give us peace. Peace, in the knowledge that our sinful nature is now dead and gone.
It may seem rather pessimistic, but the only true spring of life and peace is Jesus Christ. Order cannot come from chaos, and peace and life can’t come from the death and destruction that’s so prevalent in the World. You can see this just by asking the question, “Why are their suicide bombings and school shootings?” It’s because the World has no peace! It’s because the World has no sense of the true importance of life! – Yes, some people do understand that life is precious, but they don’t understand the true reason why it’s precious: life is a chance to serve our God on Earth – As Paul says, “For to set the mind on the flesh is death”, and it’s only by accepting Christ as our savior that we can ever have Spiritual life, much less peace.
But, notice Paul says, “the things of the Spirit.” “Things”, as a plural. So, is there anything else which can live life and peace other than Christ? No, there’s nothing else. However, Jesus shows Himself to us in different forms: Jesus is the Bible. John tells us, “the word became flesh, and dwelt among us.” God’s word, Jesus Christ, is the Bible. (Which is why the Bible is referred to as the, “living” word of God). So then, the Bible, and Jesus’ death and Resurrection, both of which give us life and peace, are what we should be focusing on.
You are Loved!
