This is what God gave me today in His word:
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2)
Paul tells us to do two things here: first, to present ourselves as living sacrifices. Second, he tells us to not be “conformed to the World”, but rather be transformed by the renewing of our minds. – Now, on a side note here, it’s very important to note that Paul calls offering ourselves as living sacrifices, a “Spiritual act of worship”. We are not to offer ourselves as actual sacrifices. That would be a physical act of paganism. Rather, we are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God, as a Spiritual act of worship. – Two tasks which seem rather imposing. After all, God wants us to offer our entire lives to Him. Something which is reasonable, when you can consider that Jesus gave His life for us, but which nonetheless, seems near impossible.
And, in truth, it is impossible. If we’re “conformed to the World”. The two things Paul mentioned are correlated; we can’t present ourselves as living sacrifices, if we’re conformed to the image of the World. The only real hope we have, therefore, is through “the renewing of our minds”. Through which, we can (through testing) “discern the will of God.” That is how we are able to present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God; by knowing what it is He wants us to do, and doing it… So, I don’t think it’d be terribly unreasonable to ask, how is it exactly we renew our minds?
Well, how is it we learn what it is God wants? Through Him telling us what it is He wants us to do. And thus, we see that the Bible and prayer are even more important. As it’s through the Bible that God speaks to His Children, and through prayer that we actually ask God to make what He wants known to us.
The point being this: we are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, because Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice. Because He died for us, we are to live for Him. And it’s through reading the Bible, that we know how exactly it is God wants us to live for Him.
You are Loved!
